Drop Shot

Also known as: short ball, drop

A drop shot is a softly hit ball that barely clears the net and dies in the opponent's kitchen, drawing them forward and opening the court behind them.

The drop shot exploits opponents who are camped at the baseline or who anticipate a hard shot. A delicate touch shot with an open paddle face and a decelerating stroke lets the ball clear the net by a small margin and bounce twice in the kitchen before the opponent can reach it. The key is disguise — the drop shot should look like a drive until the last moment. At higher levels, the drop shot is often used to pull opponents off the kitchen line, creating space for a lob.

A player reads the opponent cheating back and drops a soft ball just over the net that bounces twice in the kitchen before they can reach it.
