Partner Communication

Also known as: doubles communication, verbal cues

Partner communication in doubles pickleball is the ongoing verbal and non-verbal exchange — "mine", "yours", "switch", "bounce it" — that keeps both players coordinated and prevents errors from confusion.

In doubles pickleball, silent teams leave decisions to chance. Effective partner communication covers: calling middle balls before they arrive, calling "switch" when coverage crosses, calling "bounce it" on a ball that might go out, and discussing stack positioning between points. Non-verbal cues behind the back — one finger for down-the-line, two for crosscourt — signal serve or return direction without alerting opponents. Building a communication system with a regular partner is as important as improving individual shot-making.

A ball comes down the middle and both players hear their partner call "mine" simultaneously — recognizing the confusion, the left player defers, calling "yours."
