Pitch Command

Also known as: command

Pitch command is the ability to consistently place a pitch — not just anywhere in the strike zone, but in a precise, intended spot — across every pitch type in a pitcher's arsenal.

Command is a step beyond basic control: control means throwing enough strikes to avoid walks, while command means hitting a specific target location on demand, pitch after pitch. A pitcher can have plenty of movement and velocity but still lack command if the ball consistently misses the intended quadrant by several inches. Command develops through high-repetition bullpen work with specific target practice, and it is usually the last piece of a pitcher's development to mature because it depends on total consistency across the entire kinetic chain, not just one mechanic.

Advanced note

Track command, not just strikes, in bullpen sessions by recording actual distance from the intended target on every pitch — this reveals patterns invisible from a simple ball-strike count.

The pitcher calls her target — low and away — and hits that exact spot on eight of her next ten pitches, well beyond simply throwing strikes.

Why it matters

Movement pitches only become weapons when paired with command; a rise ball with great spin but poor command is just a ball that sometimes catches the zone by accident.

How it shows up on video

Chart the actual landing spot of each pitch against the catcher's pre-pitch target over a full outing; tight clustering around the target across many pitches is the clearest video-based evidence of command.

Common mistakes

  • Mistaking a high strike percentage for good command when pitches are landing all over the zone rather than at specific targets
  • Working on velocity and movement in the bullpen without ever practicing to a specific target
  • Losing command selectively under pressure counts because target practice was never done in simulated game stress

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between control and command?

Control is the ability to throw strikes consistently; command is the more advanced ability to hit a specific, intended location within the zone on demand.
