Slow-Play Patience Reset
Keep a long wait from turning into impatience, overthinking, or a rushed swing.
The routine
- 1Accept the wait out loud: "We’re waiting. That’s the round today."
- 2Switch off golf until the group ahead clears — look at the trees, chat, drink water.
- 3Keep the body warm with two slow practice swings, no ball, no mechanics.
- 4When the fairway clears, take one breath and pick your target before you pull a club.
- 5Run your normal pre-shot routine at normal speed — the wait does not earn a faster swing.
Cues
Self-talk cue
“Their pace, my tempo.”
Breath pattern
One slow breath in through the nose, a longer breath out, when the group ahead clears.
Physical anchor
Two loose rehearsal swings to keep the body warm while you wait.
Reflection
Did the wait change my tempo on the next swing, or did I keep my own rhythm?
When & how to use it
When: On a backed-up tee or fairway, when you are standing around longer than your routine expects.
Practice it: At the range, pause 90 seconds between some balls on purpose, then hit the next one with your full routine.
