Afraid It Happens Again

Stop playing the next pitch against the last one, at the plate or in the field.

The routine

  1. 1Catch the "not again" thought and label it: that was last pitch, this is a new one.
  2. 2Step out (or reset your feet in the field) and take one slow breath.
  3. 3Swap the fear for a job: "see it early" at the plate, "feet first" in the field.
  4. 4Set up the same way you do when you are playing well.
  5. 5Say your job once and let the pitch come.

Cues

Self-talk cue
“New pitch. Do my job.”
Breath pattern
One breath in for four, out for six, before you step back in.
Physical anchor
Re-set your feet or re-grip the bat before every pitch.
Reflection
Was I playing this pitch, or still playing the last one?

When & how to use it

When: After a strikeout, an error, or a bad at-bat, when you notice "please don’t let it happen again."

Practice it: In practice, after any miss, say the job cue out loud before the next rep. Repeat until it runs on its own.
