(Stacking)
Start with half stacking on the return side only. Have your team decide your preferred sides, then stack together on the correct side before each return and switch after the return is hit. This one-sided version builds the habit without requiring synchronization on every serve.
Signal the switch direction before every serve rather than relying on memory. A quick verbal call or pre-agreed hand signal eliminates the hesitation that produces collisions during the switch. As the switch becomes automatic, start using it to set up specific shot patterns. This means stack wide to invite a crosscourt return your partner has pre-loaded to intercept.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
Watch where each player is standing just before the serve and then where they end up when the rally reaches the kitchen line. If the team is stacking effectively, the switch should be completed before the return arrives. This means review whether coverage gaps appear during the switch. This indicates timing or communication issues.
Common mistakes
- Switching too slowly after the serve, creating a temporary coverage gap that the return team exploits with a down-the-line drive.
- The server moving to the wrong side during the switch. This means both players must know in advance which direction to go. A collision at the center is common in teams new to stacking.
- Using full stacking before the switch is reliably clean. This means half stacking (on only one side of the rotation) is a safer starting point that builds the habit before applying it to every serve.
- Forgetting that the server must still serve from behind the correct baseline position regardless of where the partner is stacked.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage tracks each player's court position at key moments. This means during the serve, during the switch, and at the kitchen line. This means helping identify whether the stack and switch sequence is being completed before the return arrives or whether coverage gaps are opening during the transition.
Frequently asked questions
