Hakbang sa Batting
Also known as: stride step, landing, front foot plant
Practice a "soft step" stride by focusing on keeping your stride foot's weight as light as possible when it lands. This means if you can't pull it back quickly after landing, your stride is too hard and is committing your weight forward.
Film your stride foot direction from directly overhead on a batting practice session and measure the angle between your stride path and the pitcher's mound. This means any drift toward home plate is immediately visible from this angle and should be corrected with a toe-closed stride cue before other mechanical work.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
On video, stride quality is assessed by measuring the foot-landing position relative to the starting foot position and the direction of the stride foot relative to the pitcher's mound. Common errors include a stride that drifts toward home plate (opening the front hip prematurely), a stride that is too long and hard (producing forward weight transfer that collapses the back-side load). A stride that lands too early in the pitch cycle (committing the hitter before the pitch's speed and movement are readable).
Common mistakes
- Striding toward home plate rather than the pitcher, which opens the front hip prematurely and causes early upper-body rotation before the pitch is identifiable
- Using a hard. This drives stride that transfers 60%+ of body weight forward. This leaves the hitter committed and front-weighted before they have read the pitch type or speed
- Striding too early in the pitch cycle. This means landing. At the same time, the pitcher's arm is still in the windup. This means which forces the hitter to hold a static ready position for too long and sacrifices the dynamic timing advantage the stride is designed to provide
- Abandoning the stride entirely in response to early timing problems without replacing it with an equivalent timing mechanism (toe-tap or leg-kick). This leaves the hitter without any pre-swing timing trigger and produces reactive, arm-only swings
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage measures stride length, direction angle, and landing timing relative to the pitcher's release point, providing a three-variable profile that identifies specific stride faults. Stride timing data compared with swing timing data quantifies how much timing buffer the hitter has between stride landing and swing initiation. This means a compressed buffer indicates a stride that is landing too late.
