Biglaang Paglabas (Flip)

Also known as: flipping at the ball, scooping

Definition

Beginner tip

The most effective beginner drill for eliminating the flip. This means hit punch shots at 50% swing, focusing on keeping the hands leading the clubhead at impact and abbreviating the follow-through to waist height. This means this compact swing naturally prevents flipping and builds the feel of hands-ahead contact.

Advanced note

Combine the "impact bag" drill with video review. This means hit an impact bag repeatedly. At the same time, monitoring the shaft lean angle on video. This means you should see the shaft lean forward (toward the target) at the point of contact with the bag. If the shaft is vertical or backward when you make contact, you are flipping into the bag. Adjust sequencing until the lean is reliably forward at the moment of contact.

Example

How it shows up on video

From a face-on camera angle, a flip is unmistakably visible at impact as the lead wrist cupping upward (the back of the lead hand arching away from the forearm toward the sky) and the shaft leaning backward (toward the golfer) rather than forward. The hands may appear behind or level with the ball at impact rather than ahead of it. The club may appear to "pop" or "scoop" under the ball. The contact sound will be higher-pitched and less solid than a properly compressed strike. From a down-the-line angle, the flip often shows as the clubhead reaching the impact zone at the same time as the hands.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to "stop the flip" by tensing the arms and holding the wrist angle. This means this creates stiffness throughout the impact zone and usually produces pushed, blocked shots. The solution is not to hold harder but to sequence better so there is no urgency to flip.
  • Thinking the flip is a hands problem — flipping originates in the body. If the hips stall or the upper body fires first, the hands have no choice but to flip. This is because the energy delivery system has broken down upstream.
  • Overcorrecting into excessive shaft lean. This means some golfers who work on eliminating the flip begin driving the hands. As a result, far forward that they create a massive block-and-hook pattern. The target is hands ahead at impact, not hands miles ahead.
  • Fixing the flip without checking ball flight. This means a flip that is compensating for an out-to-in path may produce passable shots if removed without also fixing the path. Checking ball flight after eliminating the flip helps confirm whether other adjustments are needed.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage can identify flip patterns clearly from face-on video by analyzing lead wrist position and shaft lean at the impact zone. The cupped wrist and backward shaft lean of a flip are visible even in standard-resolution video from a properly positioned camera. The system classifies the severity of the flip based on the degree of shaft lean and provides confidence ratings for the observation.
