Depensa sa First-and-Third

Also known as: 1-3 defense, runners at the corners

Definition

Beginner tip

Before every pitch with runners at the corners, confirm the defensive call verbally with your teammates. This means knowing the scheme eliminates the hesitation that causes breakdowns at game speed.

Advanced note

Vary your first-and-third calls game-by-game and even within a game. This means using the same scheme on every first-and-third situation allows smart offensive coaches to time your reaction and exploit it with a predictable run.

Example

How it shows up on video

Film the entire defensive play from a center-field angle to see all four players (catcher, shortstop cutoff, third baseman, first baseman) and track who moves correctly when the runner breaks. A botched first-and-third defense shows the shortstop late to the cutoff position, the third baseman failing to crash on a faked throw, or the catcher making the wrong decision based on the wrong pre-pitch read of the defensive call. Communication — visible in pre-pitch gestures — is the precursor to successful execution.

Common mistakes

  • The catcher throwing on its own to second on every steal without reading whether the defensive call was to cut or let the throw go
  • The shortstop arriving at the cut position a step late, giving the runner on third too long to evaluate the throw's trajectory before breaking
  • Not communicating the defensive call clearly before the pitch, leading to infielders reacting to the play rather than executing a pre-decided scheme
  • The offense successfully reading the defense's default call and exploiting the same first-and-third scheme repeatedly in the same game

Frequently asked questions
