Small Ball Strategy

Also known as: small ball, one-run strategy

Definition

Beginner tip

Learn the sacrifice bunt, drag bunt, and slap as three distinct skills and practice each separately before combining them into situational decision-making. This means small ball requires mechanical precision, not just tactical awareness.

Advanced note

Develop a three-pitch small ball sequence for each lineup spot based on their individual mechanics and speed. This means knowing exactly which play each batter is most likely to execute effectively makes your small ball offense more reliable under game pressure.

Example

How it shows up on video

Small ball execution is visible in the sequence. This means chart consecutive at-bats and look for strategic variety rather than every batter swinging away. This means bunts, slaps, hit-and-runs, and aggressive leads on passed balls all appear as distinct action types. Successful small ball teams will show base advances on pitches not hit — passed balls, wild pitches, steals — at a higher rate than power-oriented teams. Film analysis of two different teams will clearly show the offensive philosophy difference in terms of batter approach variety.

Common mistakes

  • Calling for small ball plays in run situations that require two or more runs to tie. This means sacrificing an out to score one run when two are needed is strategic misuse of the approach
  • Not having every batter in the lineup practice small ball skills, so the strategy breaks down when it reaches hitters who can only swing away
  • Using small ball so predictably that the defense shifts into a bunt formation on every plate appearance, eliminating the element of surprise
  • Confusing small ball with passive offense. This means the best small ball teams are aggressive on the bases and in choosing when to bunt versus when to swing

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab tracks contact type (ground balls, fly balls, bunts, slap contacts) across at-bats to evaluate whether a hitter's mechanical profile is suited to small ball execution or requires adjustment to produce the required contact types.

Frequently asked questions
