Disiplina sa Zone
Also known as: plate discipline, pitch recognition, walk rate
Pick one pitch type per practice session to work on laying off. This means for example, only rise balls. This means and commit to taking every high pitch until you can identify in-zone from out-of-zone reliably before swinging.
Study your opposing pitcher's chase-rate pitch. This means the specific pitch and location they use to expand your zone. This means before the game and set a hard mental commitment to take that pitch unless it is unmistakably in the zone.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
Map each pitch as in-zone or out-of-zone by pitch type to identify whether the hitter chases specific movement pitches above, below, or away from the zone at higher rates. Rise balls above the zone will show in-zone swing decisions followed by barrel well below the ball at contact. This means the video makes clear the hitter misjudged the final location. Drop balls chased below the zone reveal the opposite: the hitter committed to a pitch that finished under the zone with a downward barrel chase.
Common mistakes
- Using count information to expand the zone — swinging at borderline pitches on 3-2 when a walk is equally valuable to the team
- Chasing movement pitches reliably out of the zone because the early ball trajectory looks like a strike until the break begins
- Taking called strikes on the inner half because they looked inside initially, losing count leverage through passive zone management
- Not tracking a specific pitcher's tendencies to know which pitch they most rely on to expand your zone
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Motion Lab generates a zone contact map categorizing every swing decision by pitch type and location, revealing the specific pitch-and-location combinations where a hitter's zone discipline breaks down most frequently.
Frequently asked questions
