Frappe slap (slap hitting)

Also known as: slapping, slapper, slap hitter, become a slapper, becoming a slapper, learn to slap hit, learning to slap

Definition

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

Master the soft version first. Learn to place the ball in the third-base hole reliably before adding the hard and fake variations. The whole game works through deception — deception requires that each variation looks identical until the last moment.

Advanced note

Make the defense commit to one read by showing them the same footwork on every variation. If your crossover step looks identical on the soft version, the hard version and a full swing, the defense cannot pre-set before you make contact — which is the entire foundation of the technique.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

On video, look for the timing of the crossover step relative to the pitch arrival. An elite slapper's crossover step begins at the pitcher's release or just before, so the body is already in motion when the bat makes contact. Also watch the chopping angle. A ball aimed at the third-base hole should show the barrel coming down through the ball at an angle that pushes the ball away from the shortstop.

Common mistakes

  • Starting the crossover step too late — stepping into the box after the pitch arrives rather than before contact, losing the running head-start that makes it effective.
  • Always using the same variation, which allows the defense to preset for it — mixing the soft, hard and fake versions keeps defenses off-balance.
  • Slapping at pitches too far outside the zone. The slapper still needs to be selective. A swing-and-miss while moving through the box creates a recovery problem.
  • Neglecting the power option entirely. A hitter who never swings away allows the defense to crowd in hard. The fake only works if the power threat is real.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab's slap-hit motion splits the swing into load, crossover, approach, contact on the run and run-through, and reads your footwork from pose. It does not see the pitch or the ball, so it cannot time your crossover against the release or judge placement.

Frequently asked questions

Can right-handed hitters slap hit?

It is almost exclusively a left-handed technique because left-handed hitters are already closer to first base and their crossover step moves them in the correct direction. Right-handed hitters would be moving away from first base during the swing, eliminating the running-start advantage.

Do you need a special bat for slap hitting?

No — slappers usually use the same certified fast-pitch bat as a power hitter. The key equipment consideration is grip: slappers often choke up on the bat to shorten the swing and improve bat control for placement shots.

How do I become a slapper?

Most slappers are fast runners who bat from the left side, and some are right-handed players who learned to bat left-handed. Start with bunts and drag bunts from the left side, then learn the crossover footwork, then add the soft slap and the power slap. Expect the first season to feel hard; steady reps with a coach who knows slapping help.

How do I learn to slap hit?

Learn it in steps: bunt and drag bunt from the left side, practice the crossover footwork without a ball, then add soft toss and front toss while moving, and finally live pitching. Keep contact inside the box, because a foot planted outside it at contact is an out.

What is a slapper in softball?

A slapper is a hitter, usually batting left-handed, who takes a running start through the box to slap, bunt or drive the ball and uses her speed to reach first. Good speed and the ability to put the ball in play are the main traits coaches look for.
