Changeup (Pitching)
Also known as: change, circle change, palmball, vulcan change
The changeup is an off-speed pitch thrown with fastball arm speed but held deeper in the hand to reduce velocity by 8–15 mph, disrupting timing.
The key to an effective changeup is that the arm action is indistinguishable from a fastball — the velocity differential comes entirely from grip and finger pressure. Common grips include the circle change, palmball, and three-finger change. Many changeups also move arm-side (fading down and in on opposite-handed hitters), adding a second deception layer. A pitcher who commands the changeup can use it against any count because it mirrors the fastball until well into its flight.
Example
He sold the fastball with his arm, then the 82 mph changeup dove down and away — the right-handed hitter rolled over it weakly.
Why it matters
Arm speed consistency is the hardest part of the changeup. SwingVantage can detect deceleration "tips" in the delivery that telegraph the pitch before it leaves the hand.
