Switching from Squash to Padel

Also known as: squash to padel, padel for squash players, I play squash will padel be easy, squash player playing padel, is padel like squash, padel vs squash

Definition

Squash helps, but padel will not feel easy straight away. Your reading of rebounds, wrist skill and movement transfer well. The big change is that padel's walls are behind and beside you, not in front. Your shot must bounce on the opponents' floor before it touches their walls. Padel is also a doubles game with an underarm serve.

Squash players often pick up padel quickly. They are used to balls coming off walls and to quick, short movements.

The rules flip one key habit. In squash, your shot must reach the front wall before it bounces. In padel, your shot must cross the net and bounce on the opponents' floor first. Only then may it hit their glass or mesh.

On your own side, you play the ball after it comes off your back and side walls. That will feel familiar. You may also hit the ball into your own walls to send it over the net.

Other changes take time. Padel is played in pairs, so you share the court and need to talk. The serve is underarm after a bounce, and the lob and net play matter far more than in squash.

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

Aim every shot to bounce on the opponents' floor first, and let the walls on your side help you.

Advanced note

Use your squash touch for the contrapared and soft balls off your own walls. Then learn the lob and the bandeja, which squash does not teach.

Example

Ravi, a club squash player, reads the back glass well in his first padel game. His main fix is to stop driving balls straight into the opponents' walls without a bounce.

Why it matters

Knowing what transfers and what does not helps squash players skip the most common early mistakes.

Common mistakes

  • Hitting the opponents' walls before the ball bounces
  • Using a long, wristy squash swing instead of a compact stroke
  • Forgetting about a partner and covering the whole court
  • Staying back instead of moving forward to the net

Frequently asked questions

I play squash, will padel be easy?

Parts will. Reading rebounds and moving quickly transfer well. You still need to learn that your shot must bounce on the opponents' floor before their walls, and how to play as a pair.

Is padel like squash?

Both use walls, but differently. In squash you play to the front wall. In padel you play over a net and the ball comes off walls behind and beside you.
