Mixed Doubles Padel Strategy
Also known as: mixed padel strategy, mixed doubles padel, mixed padel tactics, padel mixed doubles, playing mixed padel, golden point in mixed padel, mixed padel golden point
In mixed padel, play to real strengths rather than assumptions about who is stronger. Choose sides by each player's overhead and backhand skills, and agree who takes the middle and the lobs. Under FIP rules, on a Golden Point or Star Point, the receiving player must be the same sex as the server.
The FIP rules add one rule for mixed matches. On the deciding point of a game under Golden Point or Star Point scoring, the player receiving must be the same sex as the server. The receiving pair cannot swap positions for that point. Plan for it when you choose sides at the start of a set.
Set up as a pair, not as two individuals. Many pairs put the player with the stronger overhead on the side where their forehand covers the middle. Agree in advance who takes lobs down the middle and who covers the glass. Communicate on every middle ball.
As opponents, target weaknesses you see, not ones you assume. Test both players early with lobs, low balls and balls off the glass. In padel, placement usually counts for more than pace, and the walls give every player time to defend. In friendly matches, avoid aiming hard drives at a player's body.
Tips by skill level
Before the match, agree on three things: who plays which side, who takes middle lobs and who calls the balls off the glass.
Plan for deciding points. Know which of you must receive when each opponent serves, and agree on a safe return target.
Example
In a mixed final, Inés plays the revés side for her strong bandeja. On the Golden Point the server is a man, and Pablo must receive. The pair agreed his return in advance: a deep lob to the server's partner.
Why it matters
Mixed padel has its own rule on deciding points and its own tactical traps. Planning around real strengths makes a pair harder to beat.
Common mistakes
- Assigning sides by gender instead of by skills
- Swapping receivers on a deciding point
- Leaving middle balls unclaimed
- Aiming every ball at one player out of habit

- Drive Side vs Revés SideIn padel doubles, each player usually keeps one side of the court. The drive side, or derecha, is the right half as you face the net, and the revés side is the left. With two right-handers, the revés player has the forehand in the middle and often takes more overheads.
- Golden Ball – Punto de OroThe Golden Ball (Punto de Oro) is a sudden-death deciding point played when a game reaches deuce (40–40). The receiving pair chooses which player will receive the serve.
- Star PointStar Point is a deuce format in the FIP Rules of Padel. At deuce a pair gets two chances to win the game with advantage. If the game reaches deuce a third time, a single deciding point is played, and the receiving pair chooses which side receives it.
- Playing to the Weaker Player in PadelSending most of the play to the weaker or less confident opponent is a common padel tactic. It works best when you aim at that opponent's weakest shot, such as the backhand volley or a rebound off the back glass. Keep some of the play going to the stronger partner. Otherwise they start covering the middle and stealing shots meant for the other.
- Doubles Communication CallsDoubles communication calls are short, pre-agreed words like "mine" or "switch" that a padel pair uses mid-rally. They settle who takes a shot and coordinate movement.
- Cover PlayCover Play refers to one partner temporarily taking responsibility for more than their half of the court to protect the gap left when the other partner is displaced, stretched, or out of position.
