Side Glass

Also known as: side wall, cristal lateral

The Side Glass is the lateral transparent wall running alongside each half of a padel court, which redirects angled shots back into play and creates unique rebound trajectories not seen in any other racket sport.

Each half of a padel court has a side glass panel (or panels) that meet the back glass at a corner. Balls can rebound off the side glass after bouncing on the floor, and advanced players intentionally aim shots into the side glass to create angled rebounds that are extremely difficult to read and return. Shots like the contrapared (back-to-side-glass combination) and certain vibora exits exploit the side glass deliberately. For beginners, understanding that the side glass is playable — and that a ball heading toward it may still be in play — is the first step.

A sharp crosscourt drive catches the side glass at an acute angle; the rebound flies back toward the centre of the court, wrong-footing both defenders.

Why it matters

Many beginners instinctively stop play when a ball hits the side glass. Recognising it as a live wall keeps you in points you would otherwise concede.
