Game Length and Win by 2
Also known as: how many points is a pickleball game, win by 2 in pickleball, pickleball game to 11, pickleball match format, switching ends in pickleball, when do you switch sides in pickleball
A standard pickleball game goes to 11 points, and you must win by 2. Tournaments also use best two of three or three of five games to 11, or one game to 15 or 21. Every format is win by 2, except that team play may allow win by 1.
There is no cap on points. If the score reaches 10-10, play continues until one side leads by 2, such as 12-10 or 15-13. In side-out scoring only the serving side can score. Close games can therefore run well past 11.
USA Pickleball's standard tournament options are best 2-of-3 games to 11, best 3-of-5 games to 11, and one game to 15 or 21. One game to 11 is allowed only for round robins with six or more teams. Under the provisional rally-scoring option, tournament directors may use games to 11, 15 or 21. These can be single games or best of three or five.
Players change ends between games. In a single game, or a match's deciding game, tournament rules also switch ends partway through. That is at 6 points in a game to 11, 8 in a game to 15, and 11 in a game to 21. The same server continues after the switch. In casual play, groups usually agree on the format before they start.
Tips by skill level
Before the first serve, agree on the target score with your group. Rec games usually go to 11, win by 2.
At 10-10 and beyond, favor high-percentage shots. You need two clear points. A cheap error hurts more than a missed winner.
Example
Tied 10-10 in a rec game, the serving team wins the next rally to lead 11-10. They still need one more point. The game ends 12-10.
Why it matters
Knowing the format tells you how long a match may last and when ends switch. The win-by-2 rule also changes how you play points at 10-10.
Common mistakes
- Stopping a game at 11-10
- Forgetting to switch ends in a single game to 15 or 21
- Changing the server after the mid-game end switch
