UTR-P (UTR Pickleball Rating)
Also known as: UTR-P, UTR P, UTR-P rating, UTR pickleball rating, UTR Pickleball, UTR-P scale, what is UTR-P, provisional UTR-P, UTR-P P1 to P5
UTR-P is the pickleball rating from UTR Sports, the company behind the UTR tennis rating. Rated players sit on a scale from 1.0 to 10.0, beginner to pro. Until you have results, you get a provisional rating, P1 to P5, from a questionnaire. After seven matches the rating is shown as Reliable.
UTR Sports rates players of all ages, genders and countries on one scale from 1.0 to 10.0. A new player answers a questionnaire and gets a provisional rating from P1 to P5. After one match the rating becomes Projected. After seven matches it is marked Reliable, meaning there are enough results to trust it.
Singles and doubles are rated separately, so a player who plays both has two ratings. In doubles, partners are not averaged: each game is counted for each player. UTR Sports says the rating is based on points won, not games, and it updates every 24 hours. Like DUPR, it compares your result with the expected one, so beating a lower-rated player by a small margin may not raise it.
Results are verified or unverified. Matches organised under UTR Sports' verified rules count toward a Verified rating, shown with a checkmark. Social and self-reported matches are unverified and do not count toward it. Ratings cannot be changed by appeal.
The rating is free. Events choose which rating they use. DUPR is the exclusive rating for USA Pickleball-owned events, and USA Pickleball sanctions other tournaments that use DUPR or UTR. Check the entry rules before you sign up.
Tips by skill level
Answer the questionnaire honestly. A provisional rating that is too high puts you in matches you cannot enjoy, and your results will correct it anyway.
Play verified events against players near your level. Results against players about 1.0 or more away tell the algorithm little.
Example
A tennis player picks up pickleball and answers the UTR Sports questionnaire, getting a P3. After her first league match she has a Projected rating of 4.1, and by her seventh it is marked Reliable.
Why it matters
Tournaments and leagues use ratings to sort players into fair divisions. Knowing which rating an event uses, and what your number means, helps you enter at the right level.
Common mistakes
- Treating a provisional P rating as a final number
- Assuming a DUPR and a UTR-P number mean the same level
- Expecting a rating to rise after every win
- Expecting social matches to count toward a verified rating
