Hit and Run

The hit and run is an offensive play where the baserunner breaks toward the next base on the pitch, committing the defense, while the hitter makes contact to put the ball in play and protect the running runner.

Unlike a straight steal, the hit and run requires the batter to swing at the pitch regardless of its quality, because the runner is already committed. The batter tries to put the ball on the ground or through the vacated infield gap created by the middle infielder who moved to cover the bag. A successful hit and run advances the runner two bases (often scoring from second) or avoids a double play. The risk is a swing-and-miss turning a stolen-base attempt into an easy throw.

Runner takes off on the pitch; the hitter pounds the ball through the gap vacated by the shortstop, and the runner scores easily from first.
