Illegal Pitch (Fast-Pitch)

Also known as: illegal pitch, illegal pitch penalty, illegal pitch call, fastpitch illegal pitch, fastpitch pitching rules, leaping in fastpitch, is leaping illegal in fastpitch

Definition

An illegal pitch is a delivery that breaks the pitching rules, such as replanting the pivot foot (a crow hop), landing the stride outside the 24-inch length of the pitcher's plate, or making two arm circles. In USA Softball youth (Junior Olympic) play, the penalty is a ball on the batter. The batter may still swing: if she reaches first and every runner moves up at least one base, the play stands. If not, the offensive coach chooses the result of the play or the ball.

USA Softball's fast-pitch rules (Rule 6A) cover the setup and the delivery. Before the pitch, the pitcher stands with both feet on the ground within the 24-inch length of the pitcher's plate. Her pivot foot touching it, and takes or appears to take a signal with her hands apart. She then brings her hands together for at least one second and no more than 10 seconds. The pitch starts when the hands separate.

Common illegal acts during the delivery include stopping or reversing the forward motion after the hands separate. This makes two full revolutions of the arm, and releasing the ball other than underhand with the hand below the hip. Pushing off from anywhere other than the pitcher's plate is illegal. That includes the crow hop, where the pivot foot replants and pushes off a second time. Lifting the pivot foot off the plate and putting it back down is also illegal. For women and girls, the stride must go toward the batter and land within the 24-inch length of the plate. Dragging the pivot foot, or having both feet in the air on the push (a leap), is legal for women and Junior Olympic girls.

The penalty depends on the division. In Junior Olympic fast pitch, the standard penalty is a ball on the batter; runners are not automatically moved up. In adult fast pitch, the penalty is a ball on the batter and one base for each runner. In both, if the batter hits the pitch, reaches first and every runner advances at least one base. The illegal pitch is canceled and the play stands. Otherwise the offensive coach picks the result of the play or the penalty. A Junior Olympic batter hit by an illegal pitch she did not swing at is awarded first base. High school and college rulebooks set their own pitching rules and penalties.

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

Film your delivery from the side and from behind. Check that your pivot foot pushes only from the plate and that your stride lands within the plate's 24-inch length.

Advanced note

If a hard push-off turns into a replant, work on a longer, lower drive with the pivot foot dragging instead. Know which rulebook you play under, because leaping and penalties are written differently across organizations.

Example

A 14U pitcher replants her pivot foot a few inches in front of the rubber and pushes off again. The umpire rules an illegal pitch. The batter takes the pitch, so a ball is added to the count and the runner on first stays put.

Why it matters

Illegal pitches add balls to the count and can cost a pitcher her rhythm. Coaches who know the penalty know when to keep the result of the play instead of taking the ball.

Common mistakes

  • Replanting the pivot foot in front of the rubber and pushing off a second time
  • Landing the stride foot outside the 24-inch length of the pitcher's plate
  • Bringing the hands together for less than a full second before the pitch
  • Rocking the pivot foot off the plate and back down before the stride

Frequently asked questions

What happens on an illegal pitch in softball?

In USA Softball youth play, it is a ball on the batter. If the batter hits it, reaches first and every runner moves up a base, the play stands. Otherwise the offensive coach picks the play's result or the ball. Adult fast pitch also awards each runner a base.

Is leaping legal in fastpitch?

Under USA Softball rules, yes for women and girls. Both feet may leave the ground on the push from the plate. Replanting the pivot foot and pushing off again, a crow hop, is illegal.

Can you swing at an illegal pitch?

Yes. If the batter reaches first and every runner advances at least one base, the illegal pitch is canceled and the play stands.

Where does the pitcher's stride have to land?

Under USA Softball rules for women and girls, the step must go forward toward the batter and land within the 24-inch length of the pitcher's plate. A stride that lands outside it is an illegal pitch.
