Colpo di Ripartenza (Reset)

Definition

Beginner tip

Practice resetting by having a partner feed firm drives at your body. At the same time, you focus only on grip pressure. This means deliberately loosen your hand at the moment of contact. The goal is not to aim; it's to take pace off the ball first. Placement comes after you trust the soft hands.

Advanced note

Target your resets crosscourt. This means the diagonal gives the ball the longest distance to travel and drops over the lowest part of the net. This increases the margin for error. A crosscourt reset also moves the attacker laterally, disrupting their follow-up speed-up position.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

Watch the paddle face at the moment of contact on a reset. This means it should be slightly open and nearly still, rather than swinging or blocking firmly. Look at where the returned ball peaks. This means a good reset barely clears the net and drops steeply. A failed reset stays high and gives the opponent another attack. Also check whether the player's knees are bent and feet planted before contact, or whether they are reaching off-balance.

Common mistakes

  • Keeping the grip too firm — a tight grip reflects pace back and often produces a floated return that is immediately attackable.
  • Swinging at the ball rather than absorbing it — even a short swing adds pace that undermines the reset's purpose.
  • Resetting too high over the net — a reset that peaks more than a foot above the tape gives the opponent another speed-up opportunity.
  • Attempting a reset. At the same time, off-balance or late to the ball. This means a reset requires a stable platform. Footwork to the ball must happen before the stroke, not at the same time.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage reads the ball height and pace after contact on defensive shots. This helps distinguish a successful reset (drops into the kitchen) from a floated return that remains attackable. It also identifies grip and arm tension patterns from paddle movement data.

Frequently asked questions

Quando dovrei resettare rispetto a fare speed-up in risposta?
