Definition

Bat path is de trajectorie die de barrel aflegt door de slagzone — idealiter een licht opwaartse, directe lijn die de tijd maximaliseert dat de barrel in het vlak van de pitch blijft.

Een goed batpad komt onder de juiste hoek bij de bal aan, zodat elke lichte timingfout (vroeg of laat) nog steeds contact produceert in plaats van een misser. Voor fastpitch maximaliseert een lichte opwaartse pad (overeenkomend met de neerwaartse hoek van de geworpen bal vanaf een verhoogde heuvel) het contactvenster. Een steile, neerwaartse hak vermindert de overlap van batvlak met balvlak. Omgekeerd zorgt een grote uppercut ervoor dat de slagvrouw onder rise balls swingt en routine strikes opploppt. Het optimale pad is direct, vlak-tot-licht-opwaarts, en door de zone.

Focus on keeping your back shoulder level rather than dropping it as you load. This means a level back shoulder produces a naturally flat-to-slight-upward bat path without any conscious path manipulation.

Use an attack angle metric from your Motion Lab session to quantify your bat path and compare it to pitch angles by location. This means the goal is minimizing the angle difference between your bat plane and the pitch plane to maximize the contact window.

How it shows up on video

Side-angle high-speed video is the best tool for bat path assessment. This means draw a line through the barrel at the contact frame and compare its angle to the pitch's approach angle to confirm they match. An upward bat path at contact will show the barrel clearly below the hand path at the contact frame. A correctly flat-to-slight-upward path shows the barrel and hands at nearly the same height. Repeated pop-ups to the pull side are the outcome video signature of an excessive uppercut bat path.

Common mistakes

Dropping the back shoulder to create an uppercut, which produces a steep upward path that swings under rise balls and pop-ups routine pitches
Taking a steep downward chop that narrows the contact window to a single point rather than a sustained zone through which the ball can be hit
Adjusting bat path based on desired ball flight (trying to hit the ball up) rather than letting the correct contact angle produce ball flight naturally
Not adjusting bat path between pitch heights. This means using the same flat plane for a high fastball and a low drop ball, rather than slightly altering the path for each vertical zone
