Dink

Definition

Beginner tip

Aim at the net tape, not a spot in the kitchen. When you aim low enough that the ball barely clears, it will drop into the kitchen. Aim for a patch of court and you will hit the net.

Advanced note

Default to crosscourt dinks — over the lowest part of the net, into the longest landing zone. Save down-the-line dinks for when an opponent clearly leans to cover crosscourt; the angle change forces quick lateral adjustment and often produces a floated return.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

Watch the paddle face and ball height on each dink. A dink that peaks above the net height when it crosses is attackable — look for the opponent's compact backswing that signals a speed-up. On your own dinks, check that the follow-through is short and upward rather than pushing forward, which tends to drive the ball harder than intended.

Common mistakes

  • Using wrist snap instead of a shoulder-driven push — wrist-led dinks vary in pace and direction under pressure, while shoulder-driven dinks are more repeatable.
  • Hitting the dink too flat — without a slightly open paddle face, the ball skims the net rather than arcing safely over it.
  • Dinking a ball that is above net height instead of speeding it up. This means a floated dink above the net tape is an attackable ball, not an opportunity to reset.
  • Standing flat-footed rather than staying in a continuous split-step rhythm — rhythm keeps reaction time sharp during fast exchanges.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage reads your paddle path and contact height to distinguish a well-executed low dink from a mishit. It identifies whether your stroke is shoulder-driven or wrist-led, and whether your dinks are landing in the kitchen or floating at an attackable height.

Frequently asked questions

Mecanicamente parecidos; a diferença é contexto e distância.
