Also known as: 双弹规则
Remember the sequence: serve bounces, return bounces, then you can volley. If you remember that the first two shots must bounce — one on each side — the rule takes care of itself. The simplest mental cue: stay back after the serve until the return has bounced.
As the return team, hit your return deep and immediately advance to the kitchen. The two-bounce rule guarantees the server must stay back for at least one more shot. This means the deeper your return, the less time they have to approach before hitting the third shot. This widens your positional advantage.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
For players learning the rule, watch the serving team's feet after the serve. This means they should be staying back to let the return bounce, not advancing toward the net. Any attempt to volley the return before it bounces is a rule violation. In competitive play, watch how quickly the return team moves to the kitchen after their return. This means their ability to do. As a result, immediately. At the same time, the serving team waits, illustrates the structural advantage the rule creates.
Common mistakes
- The serving team moving to the kitchen before the return bounces, then volleying the return. This means a common error for players new to the game coming from tennis.
- The return team not using their immediate volley rights. This means after their return bounces, they can advance and volley freely. But new players often stay back unnecessarily.
- Confusing the two-bounce rule with the kitchen rule — they are separate rules that apply in different situations; both restrict volleying but under completely different conditions.
- Assuming the rule applies throughout the rally — it only covers the first two shots (serve and return); after that, both teams play normally.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage can track both teams' court positions during the first three shots. This shows whether the serving team is staying back correctly and whether the return team is advancing to claim the kitchen-line advantage the rule permits.
Frequently asked questions
