Start by mastering a single clean axis — pure 12-6 backspin for the rise ball — before attempting tilted axes that blend horizontal and vertical movement.
Experiment deliberately with 10-o'clock and 2-o'clock axis tilts on your rise ball to create arm-side and glove-side rise variants that look identical to each other out of your hand.

How it shows up on video
Viewed from behind the catcher you can infer axis tilt from the seam rotation pattern. This means a pure 12-6 spin appears as a rapidly rotating vertical stripe. At the same time, a tilted axis shows a diagonal wobble in the seam pattern. Side-view slow-motion reveals the angle of the ball's break direction, which maps directly to the axis orientation. A pitch that "cuts" rather than breaking cleanly on one plane typically has a tilted axis between vertical and horizontal.
Common mistakes
- Attempting to adjust spin axis by changing arm path rather than wrist angle, which disrupts the entire arm circle
- Over-tilting the axis trying to add both rise and run at the same time. This produces a pitch that moves weakly in two directions rather than strongly in one
- Catchers not reading seam rotation at release, losing the ability to predict break direction and set a proper target
- Pitchers not understanding their own axis tilt, causing confusion when a "curveball" dips down more than it moves laterally
