Definition

Beginner tip

Focus on the ball, not the pitcher's arm. The arm circle is designed to be distracting — it moves a lot and signals nothing. Track the ball from the pitcher's hand and look for seam spin in the first 10 feet of flight.

Advanced note

Learn the release height and wrist angle for each pitcher in your league. A rise-ball specialist's wrist snaps slightly later in the circle than their fastball; a drop-ball specialist releases earlier with more forward lean. Over multiple at-bats, the patterns become readable even if the arm speed is identical.

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

Watch the wrist snap in slow motion — the direction of the snap reveals the spin: forward roll = fastball or drop, backward roll = rise ball. Also look at whether the pitcher's arm speed varies across pitch types. Elite pitchers maintain identical tempos. At the same time, developing pitchers slow the arm slightly on off-speed pitches.

Common mistakes

  • Reading the pitcher's arm position rather than the spin. This means the arm gives away nothing useful. The spin in the first 15 feet is the only reliable read.
  • Loading the swing based on perceived arm speed rather than actual spin — deceptive arm speed is the pitcher's primary weapon against early commiters.
  • Over-striding against a pitcher who changes windmill tempo slightly on the changeup — a longer stride narrows the adjustment window on off-speed.
  • Not tracking the ball through the release point — looking away briefly to check base runners during the delivery gives up the only cue available.
