本垒打限制
Also known as: HR limit, over-the-fence limit, home run rule, home run cap
A home run limit caps how many over-the-fence home runs a team may hit in a game. Under USA Softball rules, the cap depends on the division: 1 in Class E/Rec, 3 in Class D, 5 in Class C, 7 in Men's Class B, 8 in Coed Open, 10 in Class A and 12 in Class AA. A home run over the limit is an out, the ball is dead and no runners advance. USSSA and local leagues set their own limits, so check yours.
USA Softball's 2026 rules set a per-team, per-game limit on over-the-fence home runs in men's, masters, coed and women's slow pitch (Rule 5, Section 8A). The limits are 12 in Class AA, 10 in Class A, 8 in Coed Open, 7 in Men's Class B, 6 in Industrial, 5 in Class C and Men's Masters, 4 in Church, 3 in Class D and 1 in Class E/Rec. A home run beyond the limit is an out, the ball is dead and no runners advance. A fly ball that a fielder touches before it clears the fence is a four-base award and does not count. In coed, men's and women's home runs count toward one team total.
Senior divisions use their own numbers (Rule 5, Section 8B). Men aged 50 to 65 are allowed 9 in Major Plus and 6 in Major, each with a "one-up" rule, then 3 in AAA and 1 in AA. Under one-up, once both teams reach the limit, either team may hit one more to go ahead. Men aged 70 and 75 are allowed 6 in Major and 3 in AAA.
USSSA sets different limits by program (Rule 4, Section 8). For example, Men's Class C allows 5 and Men's Class D allows 3, Women's Major has no limit, and mixed (coed) limits count each gender separately. In USSSA's Class D and E programs, and in Women's Class C, a home run over the limit is an inning-ending out. Local leagues often set their own numbers, so check yours.
The home run limit changes the strategy of slow-pitch hitting at a fundamental level. Take a league with a three-HR limit. Once the team has hit three, a power hitter who pulls everything over the left-field fence is a liability rather than an asset. At that point, their at-bats produce outs if they go over the fence, the exact outcome they are optimizing for. This is why gap-to-gap hitting, opposite-field power, and line-drive contact are emphasized in any league with a meaningful HR limit. These approaches produce doubles and triples that score runs without counting against the cap.
Teams that succeed within HR limits usually have batters who can adjust their intent from at-bat to at-bat. The adjustment depends on whether the limit has been reached. Pre-limit at-bats allow maximum exit velocity and a pull-friendly approach. Post-limit at-bats require deliberately hitting the ball shorter, pushing to the gaps, and prioritizing base hits over fence-clearing contact. This dual-mode hitting demands mechanical flexibility. A hitter must be able to reduce pull intensity and keep the ball in the park without rolling over and producing grounders. Hitters who cannot adjust become automatic outs once the cap is reached.
Tips by skill level
Know your league's HR limit before every game and track the count. If your team is at the cap, switch your mental target from "hit it out" to "hit a hard line drive into the gap." The swing mechanics are similar. The intent and contact point change slightly.
Develop a gap-to-gap swing you can use on demand — not a different swing. But a slightly later contact point and a wider follow-through that sends the ball to all fields. This gives you the ability to score runs through gaps after the HR cap is reached without mechanical confusion.
Example
三支本垒打上限在第三局就已达到,清扫棒次的击球员完美地扎实接触,把球打进左外野看台第十排——这球被判为自动出局,此后球队改打空档路线,度过比赛剩余时间。
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
Watch how hitters' swings shift after the team reaches its HR limit. A team adjusting well will show more contact to the right-center and left-center gaps, slightly shorter follow-throughs, and a higher rate of line-drive contact. A team not adjusting will show the same full-pull cuts producing automatic outs.
Common mistakes
- Not tracking the team's HR count during the game and swinging for the fence on an at-bat that would produce an out rather than a home run.
- Overcorrecting after the limit and chopping at the ball, producing weak grounders instead of hard line drives to the gaps.
- Assuming the two teams' limits never interact. USA Softball's senior Major and Major Plus divisions use a one-up rule that lets a team go one home run ahead once both teams reach the limit.
- Confusing a limit on over-the-fence hits with a limit on inside-the-park home runs. Most HR limits apply only to over-the-fence hits. An inside-the-park home run usually does not count against the cap.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Motion Lab does not track where the ball goes or how far, so it cannot tell a line drive from a fly ball. Its pull or opposite-field tendency, estimated from your arm movement, can show whether you pull everything.
Frequently asked questions
How many home runs are allowed in slow pitch softball?
It depends on the division and the rule book. Under USA Softball rules, limits run from 1 in Class E/Rec to 12 in Class AA, with 3 in Class D and 5 in Class C. USSSA and local leagues set their own limits.
What happens to a hit that goes over the fence after the limit is reached?
Under USA Softball and USSSA rules, the batter is out, the ball is dead and no runners advance. In USSSA Class D and E programs, and in Women's Class C, it also ends the inning. A local league can set its own penalty, so check your rule sheet.
Does the home run limit apply to inside-the-park home runs?
No. USA Softball and USSSA count only balls hit over the fence toward the limit.
