Practice a "loose wrist, heavy head" feel on the backswing. After completing the unit turn, consciously relax the grip and wrist and let the weight of the racquet head pull it down. If you feel the head fall, the drop is happening. If it stays up, grip tension is blocking it.
Experiment with the depth of the drop by shot intent. A deep drop sets up a steep low-to-high swing and heavy topspin; a shallow drop sets up a flatter, more driving swing with pace. Developing both versions and choosing deliberately by situation — defensive high spin vs attacking drive — is what separates consistent baseline hitters from exceptional ones.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
From a front or side view, watch the racquet head's lowest point before the forward swing begins. A good racquet drop shows the head clearly below the wrist — often below the hip on forehand — immediately before the swing launches upward. A missing drop shows the head and wrist roughly level or the head still high. This typically corresponds to a stiff arm and a flat, low-spin contact pattern.
Common mistakes
- Forcing the drop by pushing the head down manually, which creates tension in the arm and prevents the natural acceleration that a relaxed drop produces.
- Rushing the forward swing before the drop completes. As a result, contact happens. At the same time, the arm is still in transition rather than after the full low-to-high arc is established.
- Gripping too tightly on the backswing. Grip tension prevents the wrist from relaxing, which prevents the head from falling freely.
- Skipping the drop entirely on high balls, producing a push through contact rather than a topspin brushing motion. High balls require a modified but still present drop.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage can identify whether the racquet head is dropping below the wrist before contact or arriving high. This means a key indicator of whether the swing will produce topspin or a flat, decelerating push through the ball. The drop timing relative to the forward swing initiation is visible in frame-by-frame video review.
Frequently asked questions
