Use the cue. This means "non-dominant shoulder to the ball." As soon as you read direction, rotate until your off-shoulder is pointing roughly at where the incoming ball is coming from. If you can feel that shoulder pointing at the ball, you have completed a unit turn.
Practice holding the coiled, unit-turned position for an extra beat before initiating the forward swing. This "loading pause" builds the pattern of storing elastic energy before releasing it, rather than transitioning too quickly from backswing to forward swing and losing the separation that generates racquet-head speed.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
In a front-on or overhead view, watch whether the shoulders and hips rotate together at the start of the preparation, or whether the racquet arm moves first. At the same time, the torso stays facing the net. A good unit turn is visible as a shoulder line that quickly becomes perpendicular to the net. A missing unit turn keeps the chest facing forward. At the same time, only the arm swings back.
Common mistakes
- Taking the racquet back with only the arm and no body rotation — the most common cause of late, weak groundstrokes in recreational players.
- Completing the unit turn too late, after the ball has bounced. This eliminates the time needed to hold the coiled position and load the forward swing.
- Over-rotating the hips past 90°. As a result, the hips are already open to the net when the forward swing should begin. This means this eliminates the sequential hip-to-shoulder separation that drives racquet-head speed.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage can identify whether your unit turn begins promptly after ball read or whether it is delayed, and whether the coiled position is held long enough to load the forward swing. Arm-only preparation patterns show clearly in shoulder rotation timing relative to the incoming ball.
Frequently asked questions
