Also known as: 垫步, split step, 预动垫步

Definition

Beginner tip

Start by practising in isolation without the ball. This means stand at the baseline, watch an imaginary opponent, and hop every time you would expect them to strike. Get the timing habit before applying it in live play.

Advanced note

Refine it by learning to predict direction before landing. Read your opponent's shoulder rotation and contact point to lean slightly toward the likely ball direction during the hop. As a result, you land already biased. This means reducing the first step to a push rather than a neutral jump.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

In side-view or rear-view footage, watch for a brief moment where both feet leave the ground just as the opponent makes contact. The timing should be early enough that landing precedes direction read by a small margin. Players who miss it stay flat-footed, or take their first step at the same time with the opponent's contact. This means a clear timing fault visible in frame-by-frame review.

Common mistakes

  • Performing the hop too early. As a result, you land and your muscles stop loading before the ball is struck. This means you are as flat-footed as if you had not hopped at all.
  • Performing the hop too late, so you are airborne at the moment you need to push off — you cannot change direction while in the air.
  • Treating it as a wide static stance rather than an active hop — missing the elastic rebound that is the entire mechanical benefit of the movement.
  • Using it only on service returns and not during baseline rallies, where it is equally important to prepare for direction changes.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage can identify whether the hop is present at all by analysing lower-body movement in the moments before a stroke begins. Its absence is among the most common and most correctable causes of late, off-balance contact in recreational players.

Frequently asked questions
