Also known as: كروس كورت, الضربة المائلة, قطرية

Definition

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

Practice directing the ball to the opposite corner by following through toward your target. The follow-through shoulder should end pointing where you want the ball to go.

Advanced note

Sharpen your crosscourt angle by hitting toward the singles sideline rather than the center of the service box, pulling the opponent further off the court and creating a bigger open-court opportunity.

Example

Why it matters

Most of your shots in a match will be crosscourt, so knowing the court's geometry pays off in every rally. Motion Lab does not track where the ball goes, so check your direction on video or on court.

How it shows up on video

On video, check that the swing path and racquet face send the ball diagonally across the net. Watch for shots meant to go crosscourt that come off straighter. Compare body position and follow-through direction to tell an intentional crosscourt from an accidental one.

Common mistakes

  • Opening the stance too early and inadvertently steering the ball down the line instead of crosscourt
  • Swinging with insufficient pace cross-court, landing short and giving the opponent an easy attack
  • Failing to recover after a wide crosscourt angle, leaving a large gap on the opposite side
  • Using a crosscourt shot when the opponent is positioned exactly for a crosscourt reply, instead of changing direction

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab does not measure racquet-face angle or track the ball, so it cannot tell an intentional crosscourt from a misdirected shot. Check the ball's direction on your video or on court.

Across sports

Pickleball
In pickleball dinks are almost always played crosscourt for the same geometric reasons — longer court, lower net center.
Padel
Padel crosscourt shots factor in wall rebounds, making the angle a setup for a follow-up rather than an outright winner.

Frequently asked questions
