Schlägerpfad

Also known as: Swing-Richtung, Swing Path

Definition

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

You do not need a launch monitor to understand your delivery. After every iron shot on the range, look at where your divot points: left of target = you're coming over the top (out-to-in). Right of target = you're swinging inside-out. Divots don't lie.

Advanced note

The interaction between the face and the direction of travel is the entire modern ball-flight model. On a monitor, focus on the gap between the two rather than on either in isolation. A gap of ±3° produces a small curve; ±6° a meaningful shape; ±10° or more a severe miss. Most tour players operate within ±5° to ±6°.

Example — Auf einem Launch Monitor

Why it matters

Combined with face angle, this determines the shape of every shot. Understanding which is the primary cause of your ball-flight miss focuses your practice on the correct variable. Path numbers come from a launch monitor, and SwingVantage shows imported ones labeled with the device rather than reading path from video.

How it shows up on video

The divot on iron shots reads it most directly: pointing left of target means negative, pointing at target or right means neutral to positive. From a down-the-line camera angle, a visible "over-the-top" throwing motion in the downswing indicates a negative delivery. A "slot move", where the club drops well inside coming down, indicates a positive one. Face-on video shows the arms and body either working left through impact or extending outward.

Common mistakes

  • Confusing this with swing plane — one is the horizontal delivery angle at impact, the other the tilt of the whole swing arc. You can be on-plane but still deliver out-to-in.
  • Assuming a positive delivery always draws — it sets the curvature potential, but an open face still produces a fade or slice.
  • Trying to steer the club at impact — the delivery direction is the output of the whole downswing sequence, not something adjustable at the ball. Fix the sequencing and it follows.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab does not read club path from video, in direction or in degrees. One camera cannot see your target line, so a sweep across the screen is never treated as a path. Path comes from a launch monitor; imported numbers keep the device as their source, and SwingVantage tracks a path-control score across sessions. Without one, iron divots that point left of target hint at an out-to-in path.

How this is known

What it is
The horizontal direction the clubhead is moving at impact.

Measured against
The target line, seen from above
Plus and minus
Plus means in-to-out (to the right of the target line for a right-handed golfer); minus means out-to-in.
Usually known by
Measured by an instrument — a radar or camera launch monitor
In Motion Lab
Not currently measured. Motion Lab tracks the body from video, not the club, so it does not read club path. Imported launch-monitor sessions show it, labelled with the device.

Frequently asked questions
