Secondary Lead
Also known as: secondary, walking secondary, movement lead
Start your secondary lead shuffle the moment the pitcher's front foot hits the ground during the stride. This means this consistent trigger point produces reliable timing regardless of the pitcher's delivery style or speed.
Practice secondary lead mechanics in particular. At the same time, tracking the ball flight at the same time. This means the advanced skill is not the shuffle mechanics themselves but the ability to maintain shuttle momentum. At the same time, reading contact type (line drive versus fly ball versus grounder) and making the appropriate baserunning decision in the first tenth of a second after contact.
Example
How it shows up on video
On video, secondary lead quality is measured by the distance covered during the secondary shuffle and the timing of the first shuffle step relative to the pitcher's front foot landing. Common errors include starting the secondary too early before the pitcher's front foot lands (committing the runner before the pitch type is readable), a secondary lead taken on the infield side of the baseline rather than directly toward the next base (producing a diagonal approach path that costs distance). A secondary lead that freezes on contact rather than continuing momentum toward the next base when the ball is clearly through the infield.
Common mistakes
- Starting the secondary lead from the heels rather than the balls of the feet. This requires a weight-shift before movement can begin and reduces the effective distance covered by the time contact occurs
- Taking the secondary lead in a straight line toward the next base from a primary lead angled in foul territory. This means a direction change is needed that costs a fraction of a second if the secondary and primary lead angles are uneven
- Failing to retreat immediately when the batter tips the pitch foul or swings and misses. This leaves the runner exposed to a catcher pickoff throw during the pause in play
- Using the same secondary lead distance against left-handed pitchers as against right-handed pitchers, not accounting for the LHP's ability to look directly at first base during the delivery
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage measures the timing of the first secondary shuffle step relative to a reference moment in the pitcher's delivery and quantifies the total distance covered during the secondary lead at the moment of bat-ball contact. Runners whose secondary timing reliably starts before the reference point or after it receive a calibration cue for adjusting their secondary trigger.
