Common mistakes
- Trying to swing harder rather than faster — muscling the swing creates tension that disrupts sequencing and often reduces measurable club speed even as effort increases.
- Prioritizing speed over strike quality. This means 3 mph of added club speed is worth about 8–9 yards of carry at a constant smash factor. But an off-center miss of that scale can cost 15–20 yards. Strike wins the trade.
- Casting from the top — releasing the angle between the arms and shaft early in the downswing is the most common cause of lost club speed. The lag maintained into the late downswing is where club speed is generated.
- Comparing club speeds across different monitors without calibration notes. This means different launch monitors measure club speed at slightly different points and with different precision. Don't directly compare numbers between systems without context.
