Definition

Beginner tip

Try the "whoosh" drill: grip the club upside down (holding the hosel, hitting with the grip) and swing. The whooshing sound should be loudest at the point where the ball would be, not earlier. If the whoosh peaks before the impact zone, you are releasing your speed too early. This drill trains the kinematic sequence without technical complexity.

Advanced note

For targeted speed gains, measure your club speed with a baseline smash factor of at least 1.45 before pursuing speed training. If your smash factor is below 1.44, improve strike quality first — it is a faster distance gain. Once strike quality is solid, overspeed training (with lighter implements at 20% over club speed) is a proven method to add 3–8 mph over a 6-week protocol.

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

Club speed cannot be measured from video, but sequencing and release quality — which drive club speed — can be observed. A proper release shows the arms extending freely through impact rather than decelerating. The lag maintained through the downswing releasing into the ball rather than casting early. An early release (club casting from the top) visually indicates a loss of the kinematic sequence that would have produced higher club speed.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to swing harder rather than faster — muscling the swing creates tension that disrupts sequencing and often reduces measurable club speed even as effort increases.
  • Prioritizing speed over strike quality. This means 3 mph of added club speed is worth about 8–9 yards of carry at a constant smash factor. But an off-center miss of that scale can cost 15–20 yards. Strike wins the trade.
  • Casting from the top — releasing the angle between the arms and shaft early in the downswing is the most common cause of lost club speed. The lag maintained into the late downswing is where club speed is generated.
  • Comparing club speeds across different monitors without calibration notes. This means different launch monitors measure club speed at slightly different points and with different precision. Don't directly compare numbers between systems without context.
