Ball speed removes the variability introduced by launch angle and spin — it is the purest measure of strike quality and energy transfer at impact. Track your average ball speed over a session and how it trends as you fatigue or change technique.

How it shows up on video
Ball speed is a launch-monitor metric, not directly observable from video. However, consistent ball speed is associated with centered contact. This can be observed indirectly. This means impact tape or foot powder spray on the face reveals strike pattern. A divot that starts at the ball (not behind it) suggests proper contact timing. Ball speed variability on video is inferred from uneven carry distance across similar-looking swings.
Common mistakes
- Prioritizing club speed over strike quality. This means adding 5 mph of club speed means little if the strike moves from center to toe. The net ball speed effect is often zero or negative.
- Using total distance to estimate ball speed — ball speed correlates to carry distance, not total, since roll varies by course conditions.
- Comparing ball speed across clubs without adjusting for loft. This means a 9-iron will always produce less ball speed than a driver for the same club speed due to higher loft and the geometry of impact. Compare each club to its own benchmark.
- Ignoring heel and toe misses — off-center strikes feel less than their full penalty because impact still occurs and the ball goes somewhere. Track the pattern over many shots to see the true average.
