Definition

For the driver. This means move the ball to your lead heel and add a slight spine tilt away from the target (lead shoulder higher than trail shoulder). These two setup changes will naturally raise your launch angle and reduce excessive downward attack angle. This means two of the most common reasons beginners fail to get the driver airborne reliably.

Advanced note

The modern driver distance formula is: maximize ball speed first, then optimize launch angle and spin rate to the ideal combination for your speed. At 100 mph club speed, target 12–13° launch and 2,200–2,600 rpm of spin. At 90 mph, target 13–15° launch and 2,400–2,800 rpm. If your spin is above range, adjust attack angle toward positive; if launch is too low, check dynamic loft or ball position.

Why it matters

Launch angle can be estimated visually from the initial trajectory. A driver that climbs nearly straight up is launching too high (often with too much spin). One that leaves the face on a line barely above horizontal is launching too low. From a face-on camera, the angle of the ball leaving the tee compared to a horizontal reference is a rough but useful indicator. Precise measurement requires a launch monitor.

Common mistakes

  • Optimizing launch angle without also checking spin rate. This means a high launch angle with high spin produces a balloon that loses distance. A low launch angle with low spin can produce good distance. Optimize them together.
  • Trying to hit up on the ball to increase launch. At the same time, watching the ball. This means keeping your eye glued to the ball does not influence launch angle. It is controlled by setup and delivery, not visual attention.
  • Assuming more height means more distance — peak height and carry distance are related but not the same. A high-spinning, high-launching shot can have a shorter carry than a lower, faster, lower-spin shot.
  • Ignoring the relationship between club selection and optimal launch angle — each club has its own optimal window. An 8-iron launching at 14° may be optimal; a driver launching at 14° may be too high for high swing speeds.
