Definition

Beginner tip

Take one range session focused entirely on carry. This means hit 10 shots with each club and pace off or note where the ball first lands, not where it stops. The average of those 10 carries is your real planning number. It will likely be shorter than you expect, and using it will cut your short-of-green misses by a lot.

Advanced note

In wind conditions, use the "distance-to-pin plus 10% per club-of-difference" rule as a starting rough adjustment, then refine with launch-monitor data from your session. A more precise approach: for every 10 mph of headwind, add one to two clubs for carry; for tailwinds, subtract about half a club. Altitude also matters — at 5,000 feet, carry increases roughly 10% over sea level due to thinner air.

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

Carry distance cannot be directly measured from video alone. But ball flight shape offers useful clues. This means a high, soft-landing trajectory with moderate spin suggests carry is optimized. A flat, low trajectory or a high balloon suggests spin or launch angle is off, costing carry distance. A launch monitor or measured landing point is needed for the actual number.

Common mistakes

  • Using total distance for club selection over hazards — total distance includes roll, which varies by ground firmness. Always use carry for clearance decisions.
  • Basing club distances on best shots rather than typical shots. This means actual scoring improvement comes from using the median carry number, not the one perfect shot every few rounds.
  • Ignoring wind adjustment. This means headwinds reduce carry by a lot (roughly 1–2 yards of carry per mph of headwind for a mid-iron). Tailwinds add less than most golfers assume (about half as much as headwinds cost).
  • Confusing shot height with carry distance — a high-launching shot is not necessarily the longest-carrying one. Too much spin can balloon the ball and reduce carry despite a high peak height.
