When learning a new swing position, do 100 slow-motion repetitions without a ball. This means make the movement as slowly and deliberately as possible, feeling every part of the new position. This neurological repetition is as effective as hitting balls for early motor learning. It is possible to do at home without going to a range.
Test whether a new swing change has reached motor memory by attempting it under divided attention. This means hit shots. At the same time, at the same time doing a mental task (counting backwards by 3s, reciting a poem). If your swing deteriorates by a lot under divided attention compared to full-attention swings, the pattern is not yet in motor memory and needs more repetitions. When the divided-attention swing matches the full-attention swing in quality, the pattern is sufficiently automatic for course use.
Example
How it shows up on video
Motor memory development is not directly observable in video, but its presence or absence is visible in swing consistency across multiple shots. High motor memory for a specific pattern shows as consistent mechanics across varied shots with no visible conscious monitoring between shots. Low motor memory (recently changed pattern) shows as variability between shots, visible checking behaviors (looking at hand position, taking practice swings mid-session), and performance that degrades when attention is divided.
Common mistakes
- Abandoning swing changes during the "performance valley" — the decrease in performance when learning a new pattern is a sign of progress, not failure. The old pattern feels better because it is more automatic; the new pattern feels worse because it is not yet automatic. Persisting through the valley is essential.
- Making multiple swing changes at the same time — each additional swing change competes for the same neurological resources. Working on one specific change until it becomes semi-automatic before adding another produces faster overall improvement than trying to change everything at once.
- Expecting muscle memory to be permanent without maintenance — motor patterns require periodic reinforcement to remain stable. Taking months off from golf and expecting the full pattern to be intact on return leads to frustration. Brief maintenance practice between playing periods maintains motor patterns better than long breaks.
- Confusing the "feeling" of a pattern with its accuracy — a deeply grooved incorrect pattern feels very comfortable and natural. The feel of a movement reflects motor memory strength, not motor correctness. Video is the most reliable tool for confirming whether a well-ingrained pattern is actually correct.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage tracks swing trait consistency across multiple sessions to provide information about whether specific patterns are stabilizing (becoming more consistent. This indicates growing motor memory) or remaining variable (indicating the pattern is not yet ingrained). This session-to-session comparison helps golfers understand whether their practice is producing the repetitions needed to build reliable motor memory for new patterns.
