Play one round per month with a specific score or skill goal (not just "shoot my best"). This means for example, "chip and putt every hole no matter where the approach lands" to in particular practice on-course short game under real consequences. This targeted on-course practice develops the skills the range cannot simulate.
Record yourself playing 9 holes on course and compare the swing video to your recent range sessions. This means look in particular for behavioral differences (routine length, setup consistency, decision-making time) and mechanical differences (grip pressure, tempo, alignment). The gap between what you do on the range and what you do on the course is the gap between your range performance and your course performance. This means making the two environments more similar in behavior is the fastest way to close the performance gap.
Example
How it shows up on video
The range-to-course gap is not directly visible in single-session video. But comparing video of the same golfer on the range versus on the course often reveals behavioral differences. This means shortened pre-shot routines on the range, more casual setup, faster shot pace, and absence of course-specific decision-making behaviors. These behavioral differences help explain why range results do not transfer, even when the swing mechanics appear similar.
Common mistakes
- Spending almost all practice time on the range rather than on the course. This means the most effective way to improve course performance is to practice the actual conditions of the course. Playing rounds with specific skill-development goals (not score-focused) produces higher transfer than an equivalent time on the range.
- Treating every range session as technical drilling — block technical practice is necessary for developing new motor patterns, but it should not constitute all practice time. High-transfer practice formats (random, simulated) must be included to close the range-to-course gap.
- Taking unlimited range shots without keeping track of results. This means practicing without tracking what percentage of shots go where removes the consequence structure that course performance depends on. Set specific targets and track how many you hit from each distance.
- Practicing only when you have large uninterrupted blocks of time. This means short, frequent, high-quality practice sessions (30 minutes with specific goals) produce more transfer than infrequent long sessions of undirected hitting. Frequency matters as much as volume.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage can identify practice versus course context from video traits. This means range practice video is typically uniform (same lie, same target, same distance repeatedly). At the same time, on-course video shows varied situations, slopes, and one-shot attempts. The system accounts for this context when assessing whether observed swing improvements are likely to transfer, noting that verified on-course video improvements are stronger evidence of transfer than range session improvements alone.
