Pagharap sa Mataas na Pitch

Also known as: laying off the high one, staying on top

Definition

Beginner tip

When a pitch is high, focus on keeping your back elbow down through the swing. This means lifting the back elbow unconsciously is the mechanical cause of the under-the-ball swing that produces pop-ups on rise balls.

Advanced note

Work with your catcher to identify your specific upper-zone recognition threshold. This means the pitch height at which you reliably begin swinging under the ball. This means and set that as your hard take line for rise balls in practice.

Example

How it shows up on video

On video you will see a hitter chasing rise balls above the zone as a pronounced upward sweep of the bat with the barrel well below the ball at impact. This produces a trait pop-up contact with the bottom half of the ball. Successful high-pitch handling shows the bat arriving in a flatter plane with the barrel meeting the center or top of the ball. Frame-by-frame tracking of the ball's vertical path above the zone confirms whether the pitch was technically a strike that the hitter should have attacked.

Common mistakes

  • Committing to swing on a high pitch too early. This means before identifying whether it will finish in or out of the zone. This means and chasing a rise ball that exits the top of the strike zone
  • Using an upward swing path on high pitches believing it matches the pitch's trajectory, when a flatter path actually produces better contact
  • Taking a legitimate high fastball for a called strike because the mental commitment to lay off rise balls was too strong
  • Not adjusting stance height for high-pitch counts — a slightly taller stance brings the barrel naturally to the high zone without an extreme swing adjustment

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab maps bat path angle against the pitch's vertical location at the contact point, identifying whether the hitter's bat plane aligns with the high pitch zone or produces the under-the-ball miss pattern trait of rise ball chasing.

Frequently asked questions
