Glove – Slow-Pitch
Also known as: softball glove, fielding glove
Break in your glove before the season starts. This means play catch daily, use conditioner, and store it with a ball in the pocket to develop a proper pocket shape.
Select glove size based on your primary position. This means outfielders benefit from 13–14" gloves for range. At the same time, infielders should use 11.5–12" for transfer speed.
Example
How it shows up on video
A well-broken-in glove appears pliable and closes easily around the ball on video, with the fielder's hand controlling the catch rather than the ball falling out of a stiff pocket. Larger outfield gloves (12.5–15") show wider range on fly balls while infield gloves (11–12") allow quicker transfers for ground ball plays.
Common mistakes
- Using an outfield glove for infield play, slowing down the transfer on ground balls and double plays
- Playing with a new, stiff glove that hasn't been broken in, causing dropped balls due to resistance
- Choosing glove size based on looks rather than position requirements and hand size
- Neglecting glove maintenance — a dry, cracked glove loses pocket shape and reliability
