Slow-pitch tracking is fundamentally different from baseball or fast-pitch tracking because the ball's flight is much slower and its path much longer. It has about 1.0 to 1.5 seconds of air time, versus 0.4 to 0.5 seconds in fast-pitch. That additional time is both an advantage and a trap. Hitters have more time to read the pitch. But the long flight tempts the eyes to drift rather than track the ball continuously from release to contact. A hitter may look at the outfield, check a base runner, or briefly lose the ball against a sky background. Even a half-second lapse in tracking during the descent phase can cost the hitter the arc's exact angle. The hitter may then arrive at contact early or late.
The mechanics of tracking a descending ball require the eyes to drop with the ball as it falls. Some hitters track only to the peak and then freeze their gaze at chest height. The ball arrives lower than they expect, and they pop it upward off the barrel. A hitter who actively drops their chin and follows the ball's descent path can read the exact landing spot. They can then plan the contact point accordingly. This is why coaches cue slow-pitch hitters to "keep the chin down": it is a visual tracking cue, not just posture advice. It keeps the eyes on the descending ball.
Some hitters develop a two-phase tracking habit. First comes peak tracking: following the ball up to its peak to confirm arc height and confirm the pitch is legal. Then comes descent tracking: dropping the eyes with the ball from the peak to contact. This split-phase approach is natural for experienced hitters. That is because the legal arc requirement makes peak height relevant information, not just an intermediate point. If the ball's peak is too low (below 6 feet), the hitter can elect not to swing. The same goes if it is too high (above the league maximum, 10 feet under USA Softball and USSSA rules). Confirming legality at the peak and then committing to the descent is the complete tracking routine.
Tips by skill level
Say "peak" quietly to yourself when the ball reaches its highest point. This deliberate check forces your eyes to confirm the apex before descending with the ball — preventing the most common lapse where hitters lose tracking during the transition from rise to fall.
Read the descent angle during the first few feet of the ball's fall to predict exactly where the contact point will be. A steep arc (near 10 feet) drops quickly — the contact point arrives sooner horizontally and farther out front. A low arc (near 6 feet) arrives on a shallower descent — the contact point is slightly deeper. Tracking the descent angle lets you set your contact point depth before the swing.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
Watch the hitter's chin position from the ball's peak to contact. A hitter with good tracking shows the chin gradually dropping as the ball descends, keeping the eyes aligned with the ball's path. A hitter who loses tracking shows the chin holding level or tilting upward at contact. The classic tell for a pop-up off a ball they thought was higher than it was.
Common mistakes
- Picking up the ball late — tracking only from mid-arc rather than from the pitcher's hand. Early tracking calibrates the arc height and establishes the descent angle before the hitter is required to commit.
- Locking the gaze at the peak rather than following the ball down. A fixed gaze at peak height produces contact at the wrong ball position.
- Looking at the outfield gaps or base runners during the ball's flight — any visual interruption during the descent phase disrupts timing.
- Assuming the ball will arrive at the same height it peaked at — the descent always brings the ball lower, and tracking confirms exactly how much lower.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
Motion Lab does not track the pitch, so it cannot tell where in the arc you made contact. It tracks your head from pose and flags head drift that can pull your eyes off the ball.
Frequently asked questions

- Taas ng Pitch (Arc)The arc is the high, looping flight path a legal slow-pitch delivery must follow. USA Softball requires a peak between 6 and 10 feet (12 feet in senior play). USSSA instead requires at least 3 feet of arc above the release point and caps height at 10 feet above the ground. Hitters time their swing to the ball's descent, not its rise.
