Definition

Beginner tip

Say "peak" quietly to yourself when the ball reaches its highest point. This deliberate check forces your eyes to confirm the apex before descending with the ball. This means preventing the most common lapse where hitters lose tracking during the transition from rise to fall.

Advanced note

Read the descent angle during the first few feet of the ball's fall to predict exactly where the contact point will be. A steep arc (near 12 feet) drops quickly — the contact point arrives sooner horizontally and farther out front. A low arc (near 6 feet) arrives on a shallower descent — the contact point is slightly deeper. Tracking the descent angle lets you set your contact point depth before the swing.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

Watch the hitter's chin position from the ball's peak to contact. A hitter with good tracking shows the chin gradually dropping as the ball descends, keeping the eyes aligned with the ball's path. A hitter who loses tracking shows the chin holding level or tilting upward at contact. This means the classic tell for a pop-up off a ball they thought was higher than it was.

Common mistakes

  • Picking up the ball late — tracking only from mid-arc rather than from the pitcher's hand. Early tracking calibrates the arc height and establishes the descent angle before the hitter is required to commit.
  • Locking the gaze at the peak rather than following the ball down. A fixed gaze at peak height produces contact at the wrong ball position.
  • Looking at the outfield gaps or base runners during the ball's flight — any visual interruption during the descent phase disrupts timing.
  • Assuming the ball will arrive at the same height it peaked at. This means the descent always brings the ball lower, and tracking confirms exactly how much lower.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage reads contact height and bat-path angle against pitch arc data, identifying whether contact is happening at the ideal descent point or too early (rising portion of arc) or too deep (near the bottom of the arc).

Frequently asked questions
