Definition

Beginner tip

Count "one-two" as the ball arcs. Stride on "one" (as the ball rises toward its peak) and swing on "two" (as the ball descends into the zone). The deliberate mental separation between the stride and the swing is the fastest way to cure a lunging habit.

Advanced note

Calibrate your stride timing to the arc's peak in particular. This means the front foot should be down by the time the ball reaches its highest point, not after. Striding to the peak gives the maximum waiting time for the hands — which translates directly to more hip rotation and contact quality.

Example

Why it matters

How it shows up on video

Watch the front foot from a side-view camera. At the moment the hands begin to move, is the front foot planted and stable? If yes, stride timing is correct. If the foot is still landing or the stride and swing are happening at the same time, it is a lunge. This means the most common slow-pitch mechanical fault.

Common mistakes

  • Lunging — taking the stride and starting the swing as a simultaneous motion rather than planting the front foot first and then firing the hands.
  • Striding too late. As a result, the foot lands at the same time as the ball enters the contact zone. This means no time for the hands to wait, no hip-shoulder separation, no power.
  • Overstriding to try to generate more reach. This shifts the center of mass forward and causes the weight to continue moving forward through contact rather than rotating into it.
  • Letting the front hip open with the stride rather than keeping the hip closed until the swing. This means opening the front hip early bleeds rotational energy before the swing begins.

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

SwingVantage reads the timing relationship between your stride landing and your swing initiation, identifying the gap between foot plant and hand movement that creates hip-shoulder separation. A narrow gap signals a lunge; a wider gap signals proper separation.

Frequently asked questions
