Think of hitting the ball on the way down, not at the bottom. Imagine the ball's arc as a clock face. This means aim to make contact at around the 4 o'clock position on the descent, not at 6 o'clock (the very bottom), where the bat would have to scoop under it.
Practice adjusting your contact-point depth based on arc height. Against a high-arc pitcher (12 feet), extend your contact point further out front. This means the steeper descent means the ball drops through your zone faster. A contact point that is even slightly too deep will produce pop-ups.
Example
Why it matters
How it shows up on video
From a side view, look at the barrel position relative to the front foot at the moment of contact. In an ideal contact point, the barrel is at least a foot in front of the front knee, at or above hand height, and traveling upward. Contact behind the front knee produces rolled-over grounders; contact directly over the front foot with the barrel angling downward produces pop-ups.
Common mistakes
- Contacting the ball at the back of the zone near or behind the front hip. This means this forces the wrists to roll early and produces weak pull-side contact.
- Leaning backward at contact to try to lift the ball. This actually tilts the swing off-axis and produces off-the-end contact and slices to the opposite field.
- Using the same contact point for all arc heights. This means a high-arc pitch descends more steeply and needs to be met further out front than a lower-arc pitch.
- Chopping downward to meet the descending ball, which contradicts the slight upward bat path needed to produce a solid launch angle.
In SwingVantage Motion Lab
SwingVantage maps your contact point relative to body position across multiple at-bats, tracking whether you reliably meet the ball out front and with an upward bat path. It identifies whether contact quality shifts when pitches land at different points in the arc.
Frequently asked questions
