Rotation des hanches – frappe

Also known as: tour de hanches, ouverture des hanches

Definition

Beginner tip

Practice hip-first rotation drills with a resistance band around your hips. This means pulling the hips back creates the load and then the forward explosion builds the muscle memory for leading with the hips.

Advanced note

Measure the hip-to-hand timing lag in your swing on film. This means elite hitters show the hips beginning to open 0.1–0.15 seconds before the hands accelerate the barrel. This gap is trainable.

Example

How it shows up on video

Film from the back of home plate and look for the belt buckle facing the pitcher before the hands begin to move. This means this sequencing confirms hips-lead-hands is working correctly. A hitter with passive hips will show the hands and hips firing at the same time with the belt buckle still facing third base (for a right-handed hitter) at contact. High-speed footage at the frame of contact should show the hips facing the pitcher with the hands trailing behind them at the release of the barrel.

Common mistakes

  • Firing the hips before the front foot plants, causing the body to spin without a stable base and producing rotational rollover contact
  • Using only the arms to generate swing speed, leaving the hips passive throughout the swing — common in hitters who lead with their hands
  • Over-rotating the hips past the contact point on outside pitches, pulling the barrel away from the pitch plane before impact
  • Initiating the hip turn too late relative to pitch speed, leaving insufficient time for the kinetic chain to fully transfer before contact

In SwingVantage Motion Lab

Motion Lab measures hip rotation velocity and the timing gap between hip fire and hand acceleration, confirming that the hips are leading the hands and quantifying the kinetic chain energy transfer at contact.

Frequently asked questions
