Walk Rate

Also known as: BB%, base on balls rate, walk percentage

Walk rate (BB%) is the percentage of a hitter's plate appearances that end in a walk — an indicator of plate discipline, pitch recognition, and the ability to take advantage of a pitcher's wildness.

Walk rate = BB / PA. A league-average walk rate typically runs 8–9% at the professional level; above 12% is excellent; under 6% is well below average. High walk rates indicate a hitter who protects the zone, lays off borderline pitches, and forces pitchers to throw strikes. Walk rate is especially valuable for players who do not hit for significant power because it produces on-base percentage without requiring extra-base contact. It is also a reliable indicator of a pitcher's control problems when viewed from the mound side.

Her 13% walk rate reflected disciplined zone management — she refused to chase breaking balls below the zone even when behind in the count.
