Stack and Tilt Swing

Also known as: stack and tilt, stack and tilt swing, stack and tilt method, stack n tilt

Definition

Stack and Tilt is a swing method created by coaches Mike Bennett and Andy Plummer. Instead of shifting weight to the trail foot in the backswing, the golfer tilts toward the target and keeps the weight from moving back. The aim is a steady low point and ball-first contact.

In a traditional swing, pressure moves into the trail foot in the backswing and back to the lead foot in the downswing. Stack and Tilt skips most of that back-and-forth. The upper body stays stacked over the ball, and the shoulders tilt down toward the target as they turn.

Because the body moves less side to side, the bottom of the swing stays in a more predictable place. That is why the method appeals to golfers who sway and hit fat shots.

It is one method among many. It suits some golfers and not others, and it changes many parts of the swing at once. Try it with a coach who knows it rather than from a single tip.

Tips by skill level

Beginner tip

If you try it, start with half swings and focus on keeping your weight from moving back as you turn.

Advanced note

Use a pressure plate to check where your pressure goes. Proponents and critics disagree on how much it really moves, so measure your own pattern.

Example

He sways off the ball and hits behind it. His coach shows him Stack and Tilt, keeping his weight from moving back, and his low point becomes much steadier.

Why it matters

Named methods give golfers a complete model. Knowing what Stack and Tilt asks for helps you decide whether it fits your body and your goals.

Common mistakes

  • Mixing Stack and Tilt with a big trail-side shift
  • Tilting so far toward the target that it becomes a reverse pivot
  • Changing everything at once from a video
  • Judging the method on one range session

Frequently asked questions

Is stack and tilt good for beginners?

It can suit golfers who hit fat shots because they sway, since it keeps the body centered. It is one method among many, so try it with a coach before rebuilding your swing.

What is the difference between stack and tilt and a normal swing?

A traditional swing loads into the trail side in the backswing. Stack and Tilt keeps the weight from moving back and tilts the shoulders toward the target instead.
