Playing Against a Left-Hander in Padel

Find out early which player is left-handed and where their forehand is. A lefty on the right side has their forehand in the middle, so avoid feeding them central balls. Serve and lob to their backhand, and expect their slice and overheads to come off the side glass the opposite way to a right-hander's.
Most players face right-handers, so a mirrored opponent feels strange at first. The fix is to notice it in the warm-up and adjust your targets.
Check where the strong wing is. On the right, or drive, half of the court, a left-hander has it in the middle. They will want every ball down the centre. Over on the revés half, that wing sits by the wall and the weaker one faces the middle.
Spin is the other change. A left-hander's slice and víbora carry sidespin the mirror way. Off the glass, the ball kicks away in the opposite direction to what you expect. Give yourself more room on their overheads.
Simple targets help. Serve to the weaker wing, lob over that shoulder and play to the body when they are at the net. Many left-handers are less used to returning balls aimed at their body by a right-hander.
Tips by skill level
Watch who holds the racket in which hand during the warm-up, and tell your partner.
Against a mixed-hand pair, both strong wings may cover the middle. Play wider, toward the walls, and lob to the weaker corners.
Example
In the warm-up, Hugo notices the opponent on the right is left-handed. He moves his serves to her weaker wing by the glass and stops hitting down the middle.
Why it matters
Small changes to targets and positioning take away a left-hander's strengths. Without them, a mixed pair's angles keep catching you out.
Common mistakes
- Not noticing the left-hander until the second set
- Feeding the middle to a player whose strong wing is there
- Reading their slice off the glass as if it came from a right-hander
- Lobbing to their strong wing out of habit
Frequently asked questions
How do I play against a lefty in padel?
Spot them early, find their strong wing and stop feeding it. Serve and lob to the other wing, and expect their slice to kick off the glass the other way.
Why is it hard to play left-handers in padel?
Their strokes and spin are mirrored. Balls come off the glass the opposite way, and their strong wing may cover the middle.

- Drive Side vs Revés SideIn padel doubles, each player usually keeps one side of the court. The drive side, or derecha, is the right half as you face the net, and the revés side is the left. With two right-handers, the revés player has the forehand in the middle and often takes more overheads.
- VíboraA víbora (Spanish for "viper") is a sliced overhead with wrist-snap sidespin that skids low off the side glass. It adds more pressure than a bandeja but keeps you at the net.
- Side GlassThe Side Glass is the lateral transparent wall running alongside each half of a padel court. This redirects angled shots back into play and creates unique rebound trajectories not seen in any other net-divided racket sport.
- Playing to the Weaker Player in PadelSending most of the play to the weaker or less confident opponent is a common padel tactic. It works best when you aim at that opponent's weakest shot, such as the backhand volley or a rebound off the back glass. Keep some of the play going to the stronger partner. Otherwise they start covering the middle and stealing shots meant for the other.
- Serve PlacementServe Placement in padel is the deliberate targeting of specific zones within the service box. The T, the wide corner, or the body — to create the weakest possible return and set up an easy net volley.
